A couple months ago I took photos of my friend, Daryl, for his new album. As we walked into Mellon Park together we talked about the vibe he was hoping to capture.
The album is very lively and upbeat, and he was looking for images to communicate the happiness of the music. Bright, light, and happy. Those were the words we were going for. I was a little nervous when he said happy. As a photographer I put a lot of effort into making people look naturally happy, sometimes that feels harder than it should.
We found a spot with nice light and Daryl pulled out his guitar and started playing. I set down my camera bag, picked the lens I wanted and turned back toward Daryl. When I saw him I couldn’t help but laugh at myself for being so nervous. Daryl was playing a delightful song and he looked like he was overflowing with happiness.
We spent the next hour or so at different locations around the park and I remember thinking the whole time… how wonderful it is to watch someone do something they absolutely love! That’s pretty much the whole point of these sessions, to document you doing what you love.
